From May 5-6, a delegation of experts from Alaska, including former Gov. Bill Walker, visited the Noto Peninsula to view the damage at Wajima Port and Kaiso Port from the Jan. 1 earthquake, which caused extreme shifts in seafloor levels that damaged fishing ports across the region. Alaska recovered from a similar earthquake in 1964, which caused extensive damage to fishing towns. As part of a project by SPF's Ocean Policy Research Institute, this visit served as a first step toward deepening ties between Alaska and Noto, with the goal of sharing information and supporting reconstruction in Japan. The delegation held meaningful exchanges with members of the fishing community, experts, government officials, and members of the media as part of broader efforts to deepen ties between the communities in the Noto Peninsula and Alaska.
